The 52-Minute Lapse in the U.S. Air Defense on September 11, 2001
![]()
The first plane hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center at 8:48am. The second plane hit Tower 2 of the WTC a full 18 minutes later. And the third plane hit the Pentagon at 9:40am, 52 minutes after the attack began. Yet there are no reports of F-16 fighter jets being scrambled over New York and Washington, D.C. to help during this time, even though it was known that planes had been hijacked and were on route to these cities. The first reports of U.S. fighter jets being deployed finally came after the third airliner hit the Pentagon, while the fourth hijacked jet was for some reason obviously not going directly to its target as the first three did. Those F-16 fighters in all likelihood shot down the fourth airliner over Pennsylvania. (Eyewitness reports from Pennsylvania citizens that the fourth airliner was indeed shot down by the F-16's were broadcast on local Pittsburgh television and radio, and then those reports, along with any questions about the 52-minute lapse, were immediately squelched).
