September 11, 2001 - Four U.S. airliners are hijacked, two of which crash into the World Trade Center, another hits the Pentagon, and the fourth crashes in rural Pennsylvania. According to the website below, nearly 3,000 people are confirmed dead from the attacks.

Tall - But True - Tales of the Towers
In 1977, George Willig, a.k.a. "The Human Fly", climbed to the top of the World Trade Center. Coincidentally, Willig's mother worked in the Empire State Building in 1945 when a U.S. B-25 bomber crashed into what was then the tallest building in the world. Thirteen people in the office where Willig's mother worked were killed, but she survived.
